about
Indira Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the dark fortnight of Ashwina, within the fortnight of rites for ancestors. Devotees fast and worship Lord Vishnu, and offer sesame, water and food in the names of their ancestors, praying for their peace and liberation. The legend told for it is of King Indrasena, whose father is said to have been freed by his fast.
The Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells this story as Krishna's words to Yudhishthira. King Indrasena of Mahishmati learns from the sage Narada that his father is suffering in the realm of Yama. The king keeps this fast and gives its merit to his father, who is then freed and goes to Vaikuntha.
