Shani

about

Shani is the Hindu deity of the planet Saturn, one of the nine Navagrahas, and a figure of justice, discipline and the fruits of past deeds. He is shown as a dark figure holding a bow or staff, riding a crow or a vulture, dressed in black. Saturday is his day, and he is propitiated with sesame oil and black cloth. In Odisha, Shani is remembered at Hanuman shrines on Saturdays and in the Navagraha panels of temple doorways. Shani Jayanti falls on the new moon of the month of Jyeshtha.

mythology

According to the Puranas, Shani is the son of Surya, the sun, and Chhaya, the shadow of Surya's wife Sanjna. He is the elder half-brother of Yama. Puranic and folk tradition holds that his gaze brings hardship, and that even the gods feared it, so some images show him with eyes cast downward.
