Pride is Not Proof: Understanding Standards for Responsible Heritage Engagement

Across Odisha, a renewed engagement with heritage has become increasingly visible. Temple precincts, historic neighbourhoods, sacred landscapes, archaeological remains, and craft villages are now frequently explored through organised heritage walks and guided storytelling initiatives. What was once largely confined to academic research, tourism literature, or isolated conservation efforts is gradually entering the everyday cultural consciousness of citizens. In cities such as Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack, curated explorations through historic spaces are attracting students, professionals, tourists, and residents who wish to understand the layered past of the places they inhabit. Initiatives like Ekamra Walks in Bhubaneswar, along with similar explorations led by independent heritage enthusiasts and tourism organisations, have played an important role in encouraging people to physically experience historic environments rather than encounter them only through books or monuments viewed in isolation.
