Kapileswar

about

Kapileswar is a Shiva temple in the old town of Bhubaneswar, about a kilometre from the Lingaraj temple, and it is counted as a satellite shrine of Lingaraj. The present temple is dated to the fourteenth century in the time of Gajapati Kapilendra Deva, though inscriptions and architectural fragments suggest an earlier shrine, possibly before the eleventh century. It was recently notified as a protected monument. Shivaratri is the main occasion, and its rituals are linked with the Lingaraj calendar.

mythology

According to local tradition, the sage Kapila performed austerities here and pleased Shiva, and the lingam and temple carry his name. The Hindu sage Kapila, associated with the Sankhya school, is named in many Odia place traditions, so this attribution reflects belief rather than a dated record.
