Upendra Bhanja (1670–1740), reveredly known as Kabi Samrata (The Emperor of Poets), is celebrated as the grand master of classical Odia literature and the undisputed titan of the Riti Yuga (Age of Stylistic Renaissance). Born into the royal family of Ghumsur (present-day Bhanjanagar), he renounced his princely privileges to dedicate his life entirely to poetic innovation, aesthetic brilliance, and the enrichment of the Odia language. Renowned for his staggering mastery over Sanskrit prosody, complex rhetorical devices, and linguistic virtuosity, Bhanja transformed Odia poetry into a sophisticated classical art form. His magnum opus epics—such as Kavya Baidehisha Vilasa, Labanyabati, Kotibrahmana Sundari, and Premasudhanidhi—are celebrated for their intricate verbal acrobatics, melodic rhythmic structures, and vivid imagery. Demonstrating unparalleled linguistic craftsmanship, he authored works like Baidehisha Vilasa, where every single line begins with the Odia letter 'Ba' (ବ), and Subhadra Parinaya, where every line begins with 'Sa' (ସ). Beyond his technical mastery, his compositions form the bedrock of traditional Odia music, classical dance (Odissi), and regional performance arts like Pala and Dasakathia. His monumental legacy as an aesthetic visionary remains the unmatched gold standard of classical Odia literature.
