Sisu Sankara Das (16th century CE) was a distinguished medieval Odia poet who played a pivotal role in the evolution of classical metrical narrative poetry (Kavya) in Odisha. Writing in the era following Sarala Dasa and preceding the ornate Riti period, he served as a crucial bridge in the development of Odia prosody, musical meters, and romantic aesthetics. He is immortalized in Odia literary history for authoring Usha Abhilasa (also known as Usabhilasa), widely recognized as one of the earliest and most celebrated ornate romance kavyas in the Odia language. The poem vividly recounts the mythological love story between Usha, the daughter of King Banasura, and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Composed in melodic cantos (Chhanda), Usha Abhilasa introduced rich decorative descriptions, refined emotional expressiveness, and structured poetic meters. Through his artistic craftsmanship, melodic sensibility, and mastery of vernacular expression, Sisu Sankara Das helped lay the aesthetic foundations that later reached their peak during the Riti Yuga through poets like Upendra Bhanja and Dinakrushna Dasa.
