Pyarimohan Acharya

Pyarimohan Acharya (1851–1881) was a pioneering 19th-century Odia historian, educator, journalist, and passionate defender of the Odia language. Born in Kuanspal village (Cuttack district, Odisha), he was a central catalyst in modern Odisha's early renaissance despite his tragically short life of just thirty years. He made monumental history in 1879 by publishing Odishara Itihasa ("History of Odisha"), the first comprehensive historical account of Odisha written by an Odia in the Odia language. A fierce advocate for vernacular education and social reform, he founded the Cuttack Academy in 1875 (later renamed Pyarimohan Academy in his memory) to provide accessible education to local students. Through his influential fortnightly journal Utkala Putra, launched in 1873, he boldly championed social upliftment, civic issues, and the preservation of Odia identity during the language agitation movement. Pyarimohan Acharya's visionary scholarship, patriotism, and educational reforms remain an enduring pillar of modern Odia heritage.
