Nilakantha Das

Pandit Nilakantha Das (1884–1967) was an extraordinary Odia scholar, poet, literary critic, editor, and freedom fighter. Born in Ramachandrapur village (Puri district, Odisha), he was one of the core luminaries of the Satyabadi Panchasakha alongside Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das. A brilliant intellectual with a deep mastery over Sanskrit literature, Western philosophy, and Odia history, Nilakantha Das revitalised modern Odia poetry and critical prose. His landmark poetic creation Konarke (1919) stands as a crowning masterpiece of romantic nationalism, capturing the glory and tragic sacrifice behind the Sun Temple's construction. His other major narrative poems include Kharavela, Mayadevi, Pranayani, and Dasa Nayaka (a celebrated adaptation of Lord Tennyson's Enoch Arden). Beyond poetry, he revolutionised Odia prose and critical research with his authoritative work Odia Sahityara Krama Parinama ("Evolution of Odia Literature") and his visionary editorship of the legendary monthly journal Naba Bharata. His candid autobiography, Atmajivani, won the Central Sahitya Akademi Award in 1964. Serving also as Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Pandit Nilakantha Das’s monumental scholarship, political leadership, and literary genius remain an immortal pillar of modern Odisha.
