Nanda Kishore Bal (1875–1928), universally celebrated as Palli Kabi ("Poet of the Countryside"), was a central figure in modern Odia literature during the post-Radhanath era. Born in Kusupur village (Cuttack district, Odisha), his deep connection to his rural roots shaped a unique poetic voice that immortalised the idyllic beauty, traditions, and rhythm of Odia village life. Unlike many of his contemporaries who drew heavily from classical mythologies, Nanda Kishore Bal brought rural realism and heartfelt nostalgia to the forefront of Odia poetry. His famous anthology Palli Chitra ("Pictures of the Village") remains an unmatched masterpiece depicting rustic traditions, seasonal landscapes, and domestic life. His other major poetic collections include Nirjharini, Basanta Kokila, Tarangini, and Sarmistha. A pioneer in Odia children's literature, he composed beloved nursery rhymes and lullabies, most notably Nana Baya Gita, which remain household classics. He also authored the social reform novel Kanakalata. Palli Kabi Nanda Kishore Bal’s soulful celebration of Odisha's agrarian heartland endures as a cherished treasure of regional literature.
