Madhusudan Das (1848–1934), reveredly known as Utkal Gourav (The Pride of Utkal), is celebrated as the architect of modern Odisha and the pioneer of regional industrialisation and socio-political unity. Born in Satyabhamapur, Cuttack, he was the first Odia to obtain a Master’s degree and a Law degree, going on to become an eminent advocate whose legal brilliance championed the rights of the marginalised. Driven by an intense devotion to his motherland, Das founded the Utkal Sammilani in 1903, a historic movement that spearheaded the campaign to unite Odia-speaking tracts and laid the foundation for Odisha becoming the first Indian state formed on a linguistic basis in 1936. A visionary leader ahead of his time, he established groundbreaking indigenous enterprises like Utkal Tannery and Cuttack Artware to foster economic self-reliance, showcase traditional Odia craftsmanship, and combat social inequalities by promoting dignity of labor. As an influential legislator, social reformer, and prolific writer, his monumental legacy of fearless patriotism, self-help, and cultural pride remains the bedrock of Odisha's modern identity.
