Jasobanta Dasa (c. 1487–1552) was an eminent 15th–16th century Odia saint, philosopher, and poet, celebrated as one of the revered Panchasakha (Five Friends) who led the spiritual and literary renaissance in medieval Odisha. Born in Adhanga village (present-day Jagatsinghpur), he synthesised Vaishnava devotion (Prema-Bhakti) with yogic mysticism and moral philosophy. His most famous and widely recited literary work, Govinda Chandra (also known as Tika Govinda Chandra), is a compelling narrative poem depicting Prince Govinda Chandra’s renunciation of worldly riches under the guidance of Guru Gorakhnath. Extremely popular across Odisha and Bengal, this work democratised spiritual philosophy through accessible ballad-style verse. Jasobanta Dasa also authored influential esoteric and devotional treatises, including Premabhakti Brahma Gita, Chaurashi Yantra, Siva Svarodaya, and Atmaparaksha. His enduring literary contributions remain a vital bridge between Odia folk literature, Bhakti poetry, and spiritual wisdom.
