Driven by an unwavering commitment to his mother tongue, Ray co-founded the Cuttack Printing Company and established Utkal Deepika in 1866—the first Odia newspaper—which served as a vital voice for public advocacy, reporting on the devastating Na'Anka Durbhiksha (Odisha Famine of 1866) and unifying the people of the region. Beyond his pioneering contributions to print media, he was a key figure in forming the Utkal Sammilani, actively laying the groundwork for the eventual creation of a separate Odisha province on a linguistic basis.
