Gopalakrusna Pattanayaka (1784–1862) was an immortal Odia lyrical poet and saint composer of the late classical period. Born in Paralakhemundi (Gajapati district, Odisha), he stands alongside Kabisurya Baladeva Rath and Banamali Das as one of the supreme masters of Odia Vaishnava Padavali literature. Deeply rooted in Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Gopalakrusna's poetry is world-renowned for its exquisite melodic grace, psychological depth, and pure spiritual devotion (Prema-Bhakti). His works uniquely capture maternal tenderness (Vatsalya Rasa) in depicting Mother Yashoda's affection for child Krishna, as well as the sublime romantic longing (Madhura Bhava) between Radha and Krishna. Compiled primarily in Gopalakrusna Padyavali, his timeless songs—such as Kete Dinare Dekhibi Se Syama Chandrakum and Kadamba Mule Vamshi Bajila—form a vital core of classical Odissi music and dance performance. His lyrical legacy remains one of the most cherished treasures of Odisha’s artistic heritage.
