Gopala Chandra Praharaj

Gopala Chandra Praharaj (1874–1945), honorifically remembered as Bhashakoshakara, was a monumental Odia lexicographer, satirist, essayist, and advocate who made unmatched contributions to the documentation and preservation of the Odia language. Born in Siddheswarpur (Cuttack district, Odisha), he practiced law while dedicating his life to linguistic research and literature. He is world-renowned for compiling the colossal seven-volume Purna Chandra Odia Bhashakosha (1931–1940), a landmark quadrilingual dictionary (Odia, English, Hindi, and Bengali) spanning over 185,000 words. This monumental endeavor took nearly three decades of painstaking research and stands as one of the greatest lexicographical achievements in Indian literature. Beyond lexicography, Praharaj was a supreme master of Odia humor and social satire, authoring brilliant prose collections such as Bhagavata Tungire Sandhya, Bai Mahanty Panjika, Nanabanka, and Miyama Purana. He also preserved regional oral traditions by compiling Utkala Kahani, a famous collection of Odia folktales. Gopala Chandra Praharaj’s heroic linguistic stewardship remains an irreplaceable cornerstone of Odisha's cultural heritage.
