Gopala Ballabha Das (1860–1945) was a pioneering late 19th and early 20th-century Odia novelist, administrator, and scholar. The younger brother of Utkal Gaurav Madhusudan Das, he served as a magistrate and senior executive in various princely states of Odisha, including Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, which gave him first-hand exposure to the lives of the region's indigenous populations. He holds an indelible place in Odia literary history as the author of Bhima Bhuyan (1908), widely celebrated as the first tribal-centric novel in Odia literature. Depicting the vibrant traditions, socio-economic struggles, and cultural nuances of the Bhuyan tribe of Keonjhar, the novel was a revolutionary milestone in early realistic and ethnographic Odia fiction. His other notable literary creations include the novel Raimuni and the poetry collection Kabita Kalapa. Gopala Ballabha Das's empathetic portrayal of marginalised indigenous communities and his pioneering contributions to modern Odia prose remain a significant landmark in regional literary heritage.
