Pandit Gopabandhu Das (1877–1928), reveredly known as Utkalamani (The Jewel of Utkal), is celebrated as a visionary nationalist, social reformer, journalist, and master poet of Odisha. Born in Suando, Puri, he dedicated his life to selfless public service, humanism, and the socio-political awakening of the region during a crucial period of India's freedom struggle. Guided by his belief that education should build character and national pride, he established the innovative Satyabadi Bana Vidyalaya at Sakhigopal, an open-air school that nurtured a generation of patriotic intellectuals and leaders. In 1919, he founded Samaja, a pioneering newspaper that became a powerful voice for the marginalized, fearless journalism, and relief work during devastating floods and famines. As a literary figure, his poignant works written in prison—such as Bandi Ra Atmakatha and Dharmapada—blended deep nationalistic fervor with soulful Odia poetry. Revered for prioritizing public welfare over personal tragedy, his monumental legacy as a compassionate leader and reformer remains an unshakeable cornerstone of modern Odisha’s cultural and moral heritage.
