Divyasingha Panigrahi

Divyasingha Panigrahi (1890–1947) was a prominent early 20th-century Odia novelist, short story writer, dramatist, and legal scholar. Born in Biswanathpur village (Puri district, Odisha), he made vital contributions to realistic social fiction during a transformative phase of modern Odia literature. A lawyer by profession, Panigrahi brought sharp social observation, psychological depth, and reformist ideals to his creative writing. He holds an important place in Odia prose history as the author of Tuila (1930), a celebrated novel noted for its realistic depiction of rural society and socio-economic realities. His other notable novelistic works include Amruta Kankana and Bata Pariba, which explored themes of social reform, human relationships, and ethical consciousness. Beyond long-form fiction, Panigrahi penned numerous short stories and theatrical plays that reflected contemporary social themes, contributing actively to the narrative developments bridging the Satyabadi and Sabuja eras of Odia literature.
