Bhakta Charan Das (c. 1729–1813) was an eminent 18th-century Odia devotional poet and Vaishnava saint. Born in Sanapadara village (present-day Nayagarh district, Odisha), he was a deeply spiritual figure whose poetry captures the profound grief of separation (Viraha) and intense devotional love (Prema-Bhakti) for Lord Krishna. His crowning literary creation, Mathura Mangala, is a celebrated classical masterpiece in Odia literature. The epic poem vividly narrates the poignant departure of Lord Krishna from Gopapura to Mathura, capturing the heartbreaking grief of Yashoda, Radha, and the Gopis with unmatched emotional lyricism. He is also famous for authoring iconic devotional and instructional compositions such as Manasiksha, Gopa Mangala, and the deeply moving Kala Kalebara Chautisa.
