Balarama Dasa

Balarama Dasa (c. 1472–1556) was an iconic 15th–16th century Odia poet, saint, and the eldest of the legendary Panchasakha (Five Friends)—a group of spiritual luminaries who spearheaded the Bhakti movement in Odisha. Revered for his ecstatic, impassioned devotion to Lord Jagannath, he earned the honorific Matta Balarama. His crowning masterpiece, the Jagamohana Ramayana (popularly known as the Dandi Ramayana), was the first complete adaptation of the Ramayana in the Odia language. Written in the accessible Dandi Vritta meter, it democratized epic literature by breaking away from Sanskrit orthodoxy. Another of his immortal creations, the Laxmi Purana, remains a groundbreaking social text that denounced caste discrimination and gender inequality while extolling devotion. His other major spiritual works include Gupta Gita, Vedanta Sara Chhatisa Gupta Gita, and Bhabasamudra. Balarama Dasa’s transformative legacy remains a foundational pillar of Odia literature, identity, and egalitarian thought.
